About Hugh Comstock
When you think about the typical Carmel English country style cottage with the thatched roof, asymmetrical storybook chimneys, rounded doors and rolled eaves, you have to think about Hugh Comstock. He is the father of 21 such original storybook cottages that all started when he was asked by his wife to design and build a cottage to house her thriving doll business. “Hansel” as it is called was completed in 1924 and is a whopping 244 square feet! It is said that Comstock didnt use levels and basically built cottages by eye since he didnt want them to appear symmetrical in any way.
A little known fact about Hugh Comstock is he also pioneered the “post adobe” ranch style home that is so prevalent in Carmel Valley and other parts of the Monterey peninsula. This style utilized large timber framing that was then in-filled with adobe bricks. This gave the homes a rustic feel but managed to keep them cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter as the solid walls worked as an insulator.
Hugh Comstock was truly the pioneer of the Carmel cottage and Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA.
